Manny and the Chipmunks

What is Manny watching so intently?

A chipmunk!

Manny loves chipmunks. He’s been obsessed with them ever since they came out of hibernation this year. He follows them from window to window in the house, clawing at the glass, barking. Every time a chipmunk stops by the wildlife feeder, Manny alerts us.

He can’t understand why we don’t get as excited as he does.

The chipmunks barely acknowledge him. They stuff their cheeks full of seeds and then leave. Twenty minutes later, they’re on the back patio steps, sunning themselves and shrieking, “CHIP, CHIP, CHIP,” over and over. Manny then finds them and barks at them until they run away.

Fun stuff.

We also see squirrels.DSCN3193

Adorable red ones.

Manny likes those too.DSCN3195

Here he is barking at one.

As you can imagine, it’s been rather noisy around here lately.

From the dining room table, with Manny and the chipmunks both asleep (the house is so quiet!),

  1. Oh they are so cute!!! I think I would be fascinated by them like Manny, but I might not bark as much as him 😉

    • Haha! They are really sweet and adorable looking. They can be pretty destructive to gardens, though, so a lot of people don’t want them around. We can’t help putting out seed for them, though. We like to lure them in close so we can watch them. Maybe they’ll remember that and leave our garden alone this year…. 🙂

  2. One thing I miss in the Pacific NW is the chipmunks and squirrels.
You can find chipmunks up in the mountains and squirrels on the side of town where the oak trees are, but not any around our house. Yours
    look really healthy.

    • They seem to do really well here. There’s plenty of food, I think, and it doesn’t hurt that we leave seeds out for them from time to time. Though it doesn’t take long for them to go through what we give them. A matter of minutes, in fact.

  3. Like I’ve said before. You can take the dog out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the dog!!

    • So true! It’s funny to watch how each dog reacts. Manny definitely has more hunter in him than the other two.

    • Yes – Lots! More chipmunks than squirrels this year.

    • Yes. The barking gets old. That’s when I bring out the squirt bottle and wave it menacingly. It usually does the trick.
